York heat pump service in Austin typically runs $150 – $650 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing a capacitor, contactor, defrost control board, or reversing valve. Most common York repairs are diagnosed and fixed the same day, since our trucks carry the parts that fail most often in Central Texas heat. The usual discovery goes like this: the system ran fine through spring, June arrives, and suddenly the outdoor unit hums but won’t start, or it runs but blows room-temperature air. That’s the Austin pattern we see every year starting around mid-May.
Devin Marlowe has spent enough summers in the South Congress corridor to know what 100-degree days do to a York heat pump that was barely keeping up in April. We name the problem, name the price, and then we fix it – no surprises after the fact.
Which York Models This Applies To
We service York’s residential heat pump lines across the board: the Affinity series (YHZ, YZV), the LX series (YHM, YHJ), the Latitude series, and older Diamond 80 and Stellar units still running in plenty of Austin homes. The model number lives on the outdoor unit’s nameplate, usually on the back corner near the refrigerant valves. You’ll see something like “YHJF36” followed by more digits. That string tells us the tonnage, voltage, and series, which matters because a defrost board for an Affinity YHZ won’t always talk to an LX, even if the connectors look close.
One compatibility gotcha we run into regularly: York used different defrost control logic across generations. A board from a 2015 LX won’t operate a 2019 Affinity unit the same way, even if it physically mounts. We order by exact model and serial when the correct part isn’t on the truck. For compressors and reversing valves, we recommend genuine York OEM parts most of the time. Aftermarket equivalents exist and can be solid for capacitors and contactors, but a York scroll compressor is a precise piece of engineering. Saving $80 on a generic isn’t worth the risk on a $1,900 compressor swap.
We also stock common parts for Carrier, Trane, and Lennox systems, but York work is what this page is about. Brandt HVAC Co Austin is an independent service provider, not affiliated with York. That means we can source OEM or quality aftermarket parts based on what’s actually best for your unit, not what a factory program dictates.

Signs Your York Heat Pump Service Is Failing
- Outdoor unit hums but the fan doesn’t spin. That’s almost always a capacitor. The compressor tries to start, draws locked-rotor amps, and the hum is the motor fighting a dead cap. We replace these same day for around $150 – $300 parts and labor.
- Unit runs but blows air that’s warmer than room temp. Either low refrigerant or a reversing valve stuck halfway. If it’s refrigerant, there’s a leak that has to be found first. Recharging without finding the leak just empties your wallet.
- Unit ices up in cooling mode. Could be a defrost board failure, a bad outdoor fan motor, or a clogged filter. In Austin’s humidity, ice builds fast once airflow drops. The defrost board swap typically runs $250 – $450 installed.
- Unit short-cycles, on and off every few minutes. Common culprits include a failing contactor, a tripping high-pressure switch, or an overheating compressor. The contactor replacement is one of the cheapest fixes we do, usually under $200.
- Thermostat clicks on but nothing happens outside. Check the breaker first. If the breaker’s fine, you’re likely looking at a contactor or transformer failure. Both are truck-stock items for our Austin service calls.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s what York heat pump part replacements actually cost in Austin, installed, with labor included:
- Capacitor replacement: $150 – $300
- Contactor replacement: $150 – $250
- Defrost control board: $250 – $450
- Thermistor or sensor: $150 – $300
- Outdoor fan motor: $350 – $650
- Reversing valve: $450 – $650
- Compressor replacement: $1,900 – $3,200 (quoted per job, not a flat rate)
The price you’ll see on our written estimate includes the part, the labor to install it, and the diagnostic time. No work starts until you read and approve that number. Every repair carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the part or our workmanship fails within a year, we return at no charge and make it right. That’s in writing on every invoice.
What drives the range? Mostly the series. An LX contactor costs less than an Affinity variable-speed board. The age of the unit matters too. A 2006 York still running on R-22 has different part availability than a 2019 unit on R-410A. We’ll tell you honestly if a part is backordered and what that timeline looks like before you commit.
DIY or Call Us?
Some things you can safely check yourself. Breaker not tripped? Thermostat set correctly, batteries fresh, filter not clogged? Those checks cost you nothing and occasionally save a service call. But once you’re past the basics, York heat pumps carry real risks. The capacitor holds a charge strong enough to stop a heart even with the power off. The outdoor electrical compartment has 240 volts. Refrigerant requires EPA licensing to handle legally and safely in Texas.
If you’re checking anything inside the unit with the panel off, you’ve already crossed into territory where a mistake hurts. We’d rather you call us at (361) 326-1553 and let a trained tech with a meter and the right tools handle it. The diagnostic is part of the repair cost, and we’ll show you the bad part before we replace it, every time.
FAQs
A properly maintained York heat pump in Austin typically lasts 12 – 15 years, with compressors often failing between years 10 and 14. Our climate shortens lifespan because the system runs harder and longer than a northern heat pump. Units that get two annual checkups usually outlast neglected ones by 2 – 4 years.
Some parts can be repaired, but most can’t, or shouldn’t be. Capacitors, contactors, sensors, and defrost boards are replaced, not opened up and fixed. A reversing valve can occasionally be freed if it’s stuck, but that fix rarely holds more than a season. We’ll tell you if a repair is viable, but we won’t sell you a temporary fix and call it done. Call (361) 326-1553 for an honest read.
Most common York part replacements take 45 – 90 minutes once we’re on site. Compressor swaps and reversing valves run 3 – 5 hours because they involve recovering refrigerant, brazing, pressure testing, and recharging. We’ll give you a time window before we start, not after.
Yes. Our Austin service trucks carry the most common York-compatible parts: capacitors, contactors, defrost boards, thermistors, fan motors, and universal sensors. If your unit needs an uncommon part specific to your serial number, we source it and schedule the install. Either way, you’ll know the timeline and the price before the work begins.
If your York heat pump is acting up, call (361) 326-1553. A live person answers, day or night. We’ll get a tech scheduled, send you the technician’s name and photo before arrival, and hand you a written price before any work starts. No voicemail, no callbacks, no guessing who’s at the door.
